Oakham Country Day Preschool Program

(some flexibility may be available for the number of days, as well early drop-off and extended days)

Downstairs Friends:

Our preschool program’s Downstairs Friends are aged 2.9 up to the year before Kindergarten.

This program is here to:

  • Give your child confidence. This allows them to feel comfortable so they can successfully separate from their caregiver and begin to act with a greater sense of independence.

  • Focus on socialization. This helps children shift from parallel play to playing with others while beginning to learn how to navigate playing and interacting with their peers in a kind and respectful way.

  • Introduce age-appropriate academics. This includes speech, language, colors, shapes, numbers (1-5), science, social studies, math, and small & gross motor skills.

This age group has a large focus on socialization and introducing children to structured learning. Much of the learning at this age is play and project based.

Upstairs Friends:

Our preschool program’s Upstairs Friends are the Pre-k students who are with us the year before Kindergarten.

This program is here to:

  • Encourage social/emotional growth. This helps develop confidence and helps them learn how to pay attention, cooperate, resolve conflicts, share and take turns, and express their emotions in productive ways.

  • Develop self help skills. This helps encourage independence by allowing them to take responsibility for themselves and encouraging them to do things on their own.

  • Develop Kindergarten readiness. This helps prepare children for Kindergarten by building a strong foundation for growth and learning that includes skills and academic development that are developmentally appropriate.

This age group regularly participates in circle time, story time, and learns things like snap words, letters/sounds, positive affirmations, colors, numbers, shapes and more to help students meet the guidelines for Kindergarten Readiness.

The Preschool Curriculum

Both Upstairs and Downstairs friends follow a themed curriculum that is delivered with a webbing method and prioritizes the development of social skills and kind/respectful interaction with peers.

There is dedicated time for structured activities like circle time, storytime, projects, singing, and science experiments, as well as unstructured activities that allow the children to further develop skills like making choices, facing challenges, language, socialization, math, science, and social studies. Every activity is geared towards helping your child’s overall development.

Both upstairs and downstairs have various areas for the children to learn, explore, and play during the unstructured activity time. These include a book area, puzzle table, sensory area, building supplies, a doll house, cars, farms, superheroes, puppets, housekeeping, and science and social studies stations.

Finally, all children spend as much time as possible outside in our beautiful spacious backyard. This space encourages child-led activities and learning as well as small group play, socialization, gross motor development, language development and so much more. This large outdoor play area is a fantastic resource for fun science discoveries and experiments and is enjoyed by the students year-round.

Note: We strictly follow the state ratio of 1 staff to 10 children and often exceed this with extra staff.
